Though many people don’t begin to strategize their moving process until a week or two before they change addresses, this can actually be late in the game. If you want to make moving into your new home easy and painless, follow these five tips.

Start with research.

It’s never to early to begin planning your financing for the move. Check your credit rating to make sure that there are no discrepancies and to get an idea of what kind of mortgage would be right for you. Then, research mortgage rates in Canada with ratesupermarket.ca so that you can make informed decisions about your financial plan. Starting your moving process on the right note by being as prepared as possible so that the rest of your experience follows suit.

Clean and organize weeks in advance.

This may sound silly, but going through your belongings far ahead of time will put less stress on you as the moving day approaches. If your moving day is still several weeks away, you don’t have to pack everything in boxes just yet, but organizing your belongings will be a great help once you begin packing. This will also give you a chance to get rid of items that you don’t use anymore. As an even better idea, sell old clothing, furniture, and sports equipment at a discount so that you can actually pocket some cash during your move.

Collect packing items sooner rather than later.

When you’re in the middle of putting away decorative accents and packing throw pillows, the last thing you will want to do is run to the store for more boxes and packing tape. Create an arsenal filled with these tools, and make it a habit to collect them whenever you run across them. Also, take a trip to the nearest container store to pick up everything from a toothbrush holder to bubble wrap for your delicate items.

Move to your new home in installments if you can.

If you’re moving across the country, this advice won’t be applicable, but if you’re just moving across town, you can definitely lighten your stress load by taking boxes over in several trips. You can even spread them out across a week or two if time permits so that when it’s time to move all of your large items, you can focus on getting them there safely.

Prioritize your unpacking.

Planning how you’re going to unpack when you get to your new home is just as important as figuring out how you’re going to fit your entire life into dozens of boxes. Moving is an exhausting process, so when you get to your new home, make sure to unpack bed linens, towels, and toiletries first. If you can set up the necessities, such as making the bed and hanging the shower curtain, you’ll be able to rest more easily when the day is done.
