We are in the midst of spring (although some days feel like summer already!) and more often than not we find ourselves outside with the family including our dogs, letting them roam around the yard and do what dogs love to do best - chase squirrels and play!

Spring means tick season. One day a couple of weeks back we brought in the dogs after some outside time and hubby noticed something weird on one of them - a grayish, hard bump on the back of their neck! With a closer look we realized it was a tick from outside! The dog must have gone in the brush at the back of the yard and a tick latched on. It wasn't there very long but the first thing that came to mind was Lyme Disease.

What is a tick? Ticks are tiny parasites that feed on blood. Unlike mosquito's and other insects that "bite and run", ticks latch on by burrowing their "teeth" into the skin and feed for hours or sometimes days before falling off once engorged. As gross as they sound it gets worse, ticks can also carry and spread Lyme Disease to both dogs and humans. Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi carried by smaller animals such as rodents which ticks also can feed from.
Did you know that Spring time is tick season and dogs are at risk of Lyme Disease? I knew this having pets growing up in the country but I honestly did not think of it until we saw that ugly parasite on our dog. Prevention is the most effective way to protect your pet and family against ticks and Lyme Disease.

K9 Avantix II is a topical treatment that protects dogs before ticks bite. The formula has been developed specifically for dogs by Bayer Animal Health and reduces the risk of parasite-transmitted diseases like Lyme Disease.

K9 Avantix II kills many different species of ticks including Deer ticks, Rocky Mountain Wood ticks and American dogticks, Brown dog ticks and Lone Star ticks up to four weeks with each application. K9 Avantix II kills fleas within 24 hours and continues to protect for up to a month.

Our big girl Daizy is going to have a special "doggie spa day" and her own treatment soon enough and thanks to K9 Advantix II, she (and we) will enjoy a more worry-free summer!

  5. I think dog walking is the best. Or letting the dog take you for a walk, would you walk if you don't have a dog? :-) Great incentive.
