When I was growing up, there was literally nothing to do when the weather got nice other than going outside to play. We would play from early morning until the evening and would come in frequently in between to grab a snack or something to drink. We never seemed to run out of ideas for things to do from riding our bikes to playing with our friends. With the imagination of a group of kids, the sky's the limit!

Oh how the times have changed! With technology literally at our kids fingertips, as they  get older we see them with their heads down staring at a video or game on a tablet more often than getting their shoes on and enjoying what's outdoors.

Shedding winter routines

Days are longer and we should be celebrating, not hiding inside! One great way to get the whole family out and about is to take a nice family walk. How about after dinner, once the homework and chores are out of the way? It doesn't have to be anything major, just a walk around the block, to the corner store for a slushie or maybe the park for a romp on the play structure. It will help everybody get some exercise and spend some quality time together.

Break out the outdoor toys

Every fall, before the snow settles on the ground, we gather up all of our summer toys and put them safely away in our outdoor shed until next year. The best part is that half the time, the kids forget what they have in the shed so when we break them out, they are amazed that they forgot how fun those water blasters, bikes and trampoline are.

Learn a new skill

Whether it be how to ride a bike, a new sport or game, summertime is a time for learning. Teach your kid something fun you played when you were growing up. Not only will they learn a new skill but also a lesson is perseverance and bravery, plus its a great moment in their childhoods you can share.

My kids favourite outdoor activities besides going to our local park to run and play, is jumping and bouncing on our trampoline in the back yard. There isn't a sunny day in the summer that they aren't on it, practicing cool flips and making eachother laugh. They also love spending the hotter summer days at the pool. It lets the older ones socialize as well as cool off while they play!

I try to encourage them to play outside more than use electronics no matter what the season but there is just so much more wonder and so much more to do during the nicer weather.

From going for family walks or just to play across the street at our park, getting out and enjoying ourselves is time well spent and time spent together.
