Grocery shopping can be a daunting task. Shopping with three kids is a challenge on its own, add on spending time going up and down aisles looking for the best of the best for our family. Have you ever tried to figure out which foods are best for your family simply by reading the nutritional facts off the side of the package? Time consuming and not to mention it can be confusing. We want to get the best for our money and we want to know what we are paying for at the end of the day.

Guiding Stars take the guesswork out of choosing the best foods for our family and makes grocery shopping a whole lot easier when it comes to making healthier food choices for me and my family.

How it works:

Guiding Stars is a food rating system available that rates food based on nutrient density using a scientific algorithm. Foods are rated based on a balance of credits and debits. Foods are credited for vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre, whole grains, and Omega 3 fatty acids. Foods are debited for saturated fats, trans fats, added sodium, and added sugar. Foods that are rated are marked with easy to follow tags indicating 0,1,2 or 3 stars. "No stars" means that the food item is new to the store OR although the food was rated, it didn't quite meet the criteria to earn a star. For example foods/beverages containing less than 5 calories per serving such as bottled water, dried spices, tea and coffee would not have any stars.

You can find Guiding Stars on price tags of your favourite foods at Loblaws®, Fortinos®, Real Canadian Superstore®, valu-mart®, Your Independent Grocer®, Zehrs Markets®, Provigo®, Atlantic Superstore®, Dominion®, Maxi®, Maxi & Cie®, No Frills® and Save Easy® locations. You can also visit www.guidingstars.ca and do a little research using the food finder before your next shopping trip, making it even easier to find the good food you need for you and your family!

We have a bit of work to do when it comes to choosing the right foods for our family, sometimes you'd be surprised what a little light from the stars can shed on your shopping habits. I am happy now to know what I can do to make even the smallest of improvements on our grocery list. I know that from now on I will be looking to the Guiding Stars to help me make the right choices whenever we shop at our local Loblaws store.

  2. I really like this new system - it's very interesting to see that the same food (I was looking at canned beans) can have a different rating depending on the brand! That really surprised me
