May is the month we celebrate Mom with Mother's Day but in all honestly, we should be celebrating being a woman in so many ways every day.

Having two daughters and a son, I try to be the best role model I can be; I want to teach them valuable lessons in life while at the same time working to achieve my own goals. Showing them that no matter what, man or woman, a little hard work can actually pay off. Not only do I want my kids to grow up strong and independent, but also be proud of themselves, no matter what they are doing.

I'm proud to be a woman and I have tried to always show it in front of the kids, especially my girls. I love learning new things and showing them that reading is a great way to learn. Sometimes today's distractions can make it hard to get into and finish a good book. I have a few books I've started reading; I'm hoping to finish them someday soon.

My friends at Amazon sent me a Kindle, I know, another gadget? But this is different, I'd never used an eBook reader before, always my iPhone or iPad to do almost everything, including reading. Wow, what a difference. I love my tablet and phone but for reading, the Kindle is much better. It's easy on the eyes, the font size is adjustable and there is no glare, even outside in the sunlight. It's small enough to fit in a purse so I can take it with me for some summer reading. It's really neat to be able to have access to thousands of books in one place. Kindle Highlights lets me recall favourite quotes and passages, for future reference.

Being a member of Amazon, I can purchase books online from my computer, phone or tablet and have them sent right to my Kindle cloud and access them on my Kindle (with Wifi or built-in 3G) or even the Kindle app for iPhone. There are thousands upon thousands of great titles I can add to my library. Plus, it's not a device I'm afraid to share with my oldest daughter who also loves reading!

I typically read both fiction and non-fiction genres. I like a bit of fantasy mixed with my reality. One type of non-fiction I do like to read is life, biography, "how they got there" success story type books.

With my new Kindle Paperwhite loaded with books written by some amazing women, I found one I have been enjoying: Bossy Pants by Tina Fey. It tells life stories from the funny lady herself from the beginning of her life up to becoming an executive producer aka 'the boss'; I personally love her work (30 Rock, SNL, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt etc). In her book, she tells her own personal and very real story about living through life's perfections, and imperfections, going through the ages, stages, ups and downs while achieving her goals - a strong woman, the kind we all want our daughters to grow up to be like.

Another great one which I got for my daughter and myself is Bad Girls Throughout History: 100 Remarkable Women Who Changed the World by Ann Shen which tells the stories of some of the most remarkable women in history and the changes they made for the future of all women, despite what everyone else said or thought. It is an empowering book and great resource for my daughter to learn about some really remarkable women in history.

There are literally thousands of great titles to choose from to fill your Kindle library at Amazon. Here are two other recommendations from best-selling female authors available on Amazon.ca, I can't wait to start reading them myself:

How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life by Lilly Singh
In the Company of Women: Inspiration and Advice from over 100 Makers, Artists, and Entrepreneurs by Grace Bonny
