Now that both of my older kids go to school, they both have learned how to hand write. The oldest can write full pages (sometimes you can even read them!) while Little guy has just mastered his name this year.

Did you know that even with the advantages of technology, most parents will still agree that every child should learn how to hand write using a pencil and paper. Writing is an essential tool for learning and helps improve idea composition, expression, fine motor skills, critical thinking and emotional growth.

To help kids get on the right path to writing, BIC has a special line of writing tools specifically for smaller hands with new BIC Kids! The first and only line of writing instruments designed to help kids learn how to write. This collection includes BIC Kids Mechanical Pencils, BIC Kids Pens and BIC Kids Stylus. New BIC Kids offer a unique guiding line to help place little fingers properly, are ergonomically designed specifically for kids hands and work for both left or right handed writers.

I know school is out for summer but never too early to start collecting supplies for September and my kids are always colouring, writing or drawing in school or out of school. You can never have too many writing tools at our house. Writing and drawing are great ways to show creativity and let the imagination soar.

We were sent some of BIC products including the new BIC Kids collection to put to the test with our little ones. Here is what my oldest thought in their own writing:

My oldest is more into writing than her younger brother. She is always asking me to borrow pens and pencils, asking me if I have any spare note books she can use. She loves writing stories about her favourite things, she always adds drawings.

She said she finds the BIC Kids pens write easier, they don't get her fingers all messy with ink and they are easy to hold. Big thumbs up and definite recommendation for the next school year.

Pictures can say a thousand words, they tell a story and share a memory. As a mom, I am usually the one behind the camera capturing our family moments and honestly I'm not very good at it. I have never owned a really good quality camera and I have never taken any kind of photography courses. Like others, I let my proud mom moments take the camera and capture away.

We all want the best out of our photos, we want crisp and clear, natural moments. Being on the go most of the time, I'm often taking pictures with my iPhone. It sometimes works out great but other times I wish I had a better camera on hand. I think as a mom and someone who enjoys taking pictures, I should really invest in a good quality camera and learn a few new tricks.

Canon Canada shares some fantastic tips and tricks for those of us trying to capture the most precious moments of parenthood, our baby's first few years with Babymoments.ca

It is an interactive Facebook app that teaches you different ways to take different pictures for every stage of your baby's first year. It lets you know what type of camera would work best, lighting, camera setting, positioning and more. You could become a pro at your own family photo shoots in no time!

Simply visit the Canon Canada Facebook page and click on the "Baby Moments" tab to get started! You choose which stage baby to be photographed is in and it gives you a bunch of options as to what pose you are looking for. Smash cake, cruising and sitting in my own chair are a few of the options for older babies 10-12 months. Our youngest, Baby M is now 18 months old but we could still apply almost all of the tips and tricks to our own family photo shoots.

With the arrival of summer, we know we are going to want to capture every experience and adventure and at least now with a few good tips and tricks, we can make our memories all the more beautiful with Canon Canada.

Picture this - You have just come home from a wonderful family vacation. The family is exhausted from a fun filled time and all you want to do is go in, take a shower and upload the hundreds of photos you took onto your computer. Upon reaching the front door you realize something feels strange. Someone broke into your house when you were gone.

Be safe this summer and remember to take extra measures to protect your home and your well being. With the summer holidays creeping up fast, families are more often than not either outside or away from home enjoying the nice weather. During the summer holidays, 44% of North Americans don't take proper security measures other than just locking windows and doors to keep their homes safe.

Master Lock has some great tips to keep your home safe and give you peace of mind this summer:

Make your back yard a safe place.  Remember to put away garden tools and lawn mowers, they could be tempting for little kids to play with or even stolen by a rude passer by. Secure your shed or garage door with a high-security, weather resistant lock such as Master Lock Magnum Laminated pad lock. This lock will securely keep kids away from tools and also prevent theft. We have a back gate which we keep locked because of kids and dogs, we wouldn't want anyone opening it in the night.

Sleep safely with windows open. Sleeping with the window open during hotter temperatures can give a nice breeze and make for better sleeping conditions. Unfortunately keeping the windows open also can act as an invite to intruders giving them easy access to your home. You can help prevent this worry by using a home security system that includes window protection. You can also use a blocking device to block windows and doors from being open from the outside. Master Lock's Door Security bar is a great option to secure patio doors.

Designate a family meeting place. More than half of North Americans don't have a plan, a designated meeting place in case there is ever a house fire. It's a good idea to always have a family evacuation plan and practice it throughout the year. Kind of like how schools have fire drills. When you are out travelling away from home, always make sure to pick a meeting spot in case anyone gets lost or if you seperate for the day like at an amusement park or carnival.

Check smoke detectors. Properly installed and updated smoke detectors save lives and can protect against injury and loss. Only 7% of North Americans check their smoke detectors monthly and make sure they are working. It is recommended to change the batteries every six months to a year or when the battery is low. Also change the smoke detector every 10 years.

Create back ups. Ever go on a summer vacation and lose your house key or have someone need to access your house but have no spare key? Leave a copy in a Master Lock Storage Security Lock Box for access to only those with the combination to the lock.

Prepare for the unexpected. Keep important information like health card numbers, online passwords and more safe when you travel, or just safe in general with Master Lock Vault. A free and secure way to have everything you need on hand, digitally on your PC, Mac, iPhone or Android device. You can sign up today at www.masterlockvault.com

Last winter, I posed about the SmarTrike Zoo Tricycle that was gifted to our little girl for her first birthday. Being it snowy weather, we had taken a look at it but hadn't set it up just yet. Now, with the arrival of beautiful weather and summer fun, we finally set it up and have been putting it to good use. She just loves it and we think it's pretty cool too.

SmarTrike trikes are almost like a four step, tricycle-stroller hybrid - go for walks when baby is small and by age of three they can race around on their own!

They are easy to set up and comes with everything you need in the box. Once set up, decide which level your baby is on and off you go! Baby M was super happy when we showed her the SmarTrike. We have hers set at level two, no canopy but still requires the safety bar, harness and full parental control. She does love to practice her steering though! :)

This summer you can have fun with your little ones with the new SmarTrike Chic 4-in-1 steering tricycle! This upgraded model is the ultimate outdoor experience. It is equipped with patented Touch Steering technology like our Zoo Tricycle, the Chic allows parents to easily control and move the trike with a simple touch. The red navigator button allows for easy transition to child steering, let your kid lead the way! It's 4-in-1 capability allows the trike to grow with your baby from ages 10 months to 3 years old starting with full parental control to independant riding. The SmarTrike Chic comes in pink or black.

If you are looking for that perfect first trike for your little one or someone you know, take a look at the SmarTrike. It's easy to use and a fun way for your little one to learn how to ride a trike.

For more information about SmarTrike and to see the entire collection of trikes available, please visit www.Smart-Trike.com

Do you have a little one or know someone who does? How about making their very first trike a SmarTrike! One lucky AME reader has the chance to win a SmarTrike Chic 4-in-1 steering tricycle in black to enjoy!

Summer holidays bring us all the opportunity to spend time with our families. Fun in the sun and summer memories made with day trips and summer travel. We don't typically vacate anywhere exotic during the summer but we often take day trips during the nice days. We take the kids to the local pool, nearby splashpads or sometimes spend the day at grandpas sitting beside his pool. Either way, no matter what we do we all have fun.

Whatever your destination this summer whether it be camping in your RV or spending time sitting on the beach while your little ones make sand castles, here are some great tips from P&G to help you be prepared this summer:

Take time to prep - dedicate time well before departure to plan your packing - yes plan. Check out the seven day forecast, if you are vacating make sure flight times are accurate, check construction and closures for driving routes to make a realistic travel route to get you there on time. If you're flying, remember to double check what you can and can't bring in your carry-on to avoid anything being thrown out.

Make a list, check it twice - If heading on a road trip, packing the family and your trip essentials can mean a tightly packed vehicle. Making a check list of what you really need will help eliminate those "nice to have" items that take up way too much space. Get the kids involved with preparing. Throughout the week have the kids write down items they use in the day on a chalk or white board in a central location (kitchen maybe?). At the end of the week, go through the list together and narrow it down to the must haves. You may be surprised by some of the things you use on a daily basis.

To pack it right, pack light! I've learned this one travelling just on my own, I can imagine with the whole family. The lighter the better. Packing with kids and pets may be difficult to live by this mantra but keeping things light and simple leaves room for souvenirs! Downsize by bringing items that have more uses than one. Pampers Sensitive wipes aren't just for changing diapers and are a great alternative for wiping up messes on the road. Have Puffs Basic Tissues on hand to aid unexpected clean ups. Bounce free & Sensitive dryer sheets are a great static solution on the go. Rub along your electric charged clothing item to help remove that pesky static! When you pack up your clothes, try rolling them instead of folding. It often helps keep things less wrinkled and can save space in your suitcase. To keep everything smelling fresh, longer, spray the inside of your suitcase with Febreze Fabric Refresher Extra Strength.

Car essentials - Its easy to be tempted by road side stops for fries and ice cream, which can add up and increase your travel budget. Try bringing cut fruit, veggies, sandwiches and bags of trail mix to help curb everyones appetite. Don't worry about the mess with Bounty DuraTowels White Paper Towels, great for spills and sticky fingers. For bathroom pitstops, bring your own TP. Yes, often public rest stops are missing the thing you need most. Be prepared with Charmin basic. Don't forget to pack your personals like Scope Outlast, Oral-B Pro-Health Cross Action Manual toothbrush and Oral-B Pro-Health Glide floss so you can freshen up your mouth on the road. Long car rides can often result in smells you'd wish had stayed at that rest stop. Keep your car smelling fresh for the ride with Febreze Car Vent Clip air fresheners

Last but not least, safety first. Don't forget to pack a first aid kit, you never know what can come your way when traveling. From cuts, bruises, to colds and allergies, be ready to tackle it all so the fun never stops!

Whatever you do this summer, make it a safe and happy time to relax and have some fun! :) Follow @PGinsider on Twitter and like the PGeveryday Facebook page for the latest updates!

Talent shows can be fun, especially when your child is participating. Our oldest songbird had been talking about her school talent show for months. She wouldn't let us hear her practice, although I could often hear her through her bedroom door belting out the words to "Let it go" over and over.

Finally the day came, we got up early and made sure everything was set up. She forgot the "Elsa crown" we made, it had been drying on top of the fridge. I knew I should have put it somewhere where one of us would have seen it. Oh well, it didn't seem to affect her performance.

I'm so happy the weather app on my phone was wrong and it actually didn't rain like I was hoping it wouldn't. It was a nice walk, sunny and warm. I arrived at the school but forgot how far into the school the gym was (opposite end of where you go in) and showed up a sweaty mess from speed walking my way there. I was on time though and I was there, that's what counted to my daughter.

When I walked into the gym, I could see her sitting on the far wall with her group, looking for me. I signaled her with a wave and she returned it with bright eyes and a big smile. I saw my little guy too, sitting in the audience near the front with the rest of his class. He wasn't in the talent show, it was for grade three and up. The kids are always so excited when I come into the school.

The stage was set up with a banner full of stars, lights, audio and all. They did a really good job. I watched a couple of acts before K's, dancing and singing! There were a couple of acts before hers, dancing and singing. It's nice to see the kids so proudly showcasing their talent. My girl went on at 9:10am this morning.

From now on when my brain tells me "maybe you should bring your camera", I'm going to listen to it. My iPhone memory filled up and stopped the video twice, second time at the best part. The photo I took when they got on stage somehow disappeared among the freezing. Very disappointed that my iPhone let me down but hey 45 seconds is better than nothing. I have no idea what the mini dance sequence was all about during the song but cute! Oh and excuse my finger, it slipped.
;-)

video

I know every parent in North America has their own child's rendition of this song but I am proud of my girl. She had a little bit of a lingering cold and still sounded good. She won't even let her own parents listen to her sing and yet her and her group had the whole room singing along. She got congratulatory hugs from me and a couple of her friends after her song was finished.

She thanked me for coming, she doesn't have to thank me. That's what moms are for. This is just the first of many proud moments for her, I will be there for all of them.

I like our living room, for the most part. I mean, its average with couches, a TV and of course kids toys everywhere. I don't really get to sit down and use it myself very often unless I'm in there tending to one of the kids, chasing one of the dogs out or cleaning after everyone else is finished.

On the walls of our living room are some really nice canvas prints with inspirational quotes on them that hubby picked up a few years ago. I really like them but there is something missing in this decor; Photos of the family, namely the kids hung on the wall.

My kitchen fridge has some of the kids posted on it with magnets and in the office we do have a couple of framed photos of the kids when they were smaller and oh I do have some in my wallet but overall, our photo collection has become quite digital.

I remember growing up in the day when our parents would put our school photos in the hallway going up the stairs so people would see how lovely their kids were. My grandmother had a collection of framed family photos that rested on top of her old television set. Memories on display.

It made me kind of sad that I don't even have a recent printed photo of all three of my kids together. Collages are nice but I mean a genuine, natural group picture. Being so used to having everything on my phone, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and blogging we often forget about physical prints. We need to get back to showing off our family in real life.

When I was contacted by PosterJack.ca to take a look at their print service, I thought what a great idea to start adding more family photos to our living room. You can have your favourite prints on their way to you with PosterJack.ca in three simple steps:

1) Select product - Choose between poster, canvas, framed, peel and stick and more! We chose frameless mounting for our picture and three regular matte poster prints the same size. You can also just choose regular poster prints and get creative with your own frames and more.

2) Select size - Choose how small or how big you want your print to be. There are different sizes at different prices depending what you want. We went with a simple 12X8 photo.

3) Choose image - Upload your photo (or photos to create a collage) and PosterJack.ca will check it to make sure it's the right size (you can crop or upload a new one if it isn't) and fit for the product you chose.

After that head off to checkout where you can use any coupon codes and pay for your purchase. It took less than a week for our print to arrive and I really like it. Mind you the image quality originally wasn't the best because I don't have a really awesome photography camera plus I was taking pics of moving children.

The result put a huge smile on my face when I opened my package either way. A colourful, vibrant and glossy image of my three little monkeys. Now our only dilemma is figuring out an amazing spot to put it up in the living room.

PosterJack.ca prints make a great addition to our interior family decor and they can also make great gifts for Dads and Grads this June! They also offer FREE shipping on orders over $150!

School will be out for summer in just a few weeks, unbelievable how quickly this school year has gone by! Soon enough we will be able to sit back, relax and enjoy the summer weather. Not only will school be out but our local community pool will be cleaned and set up for another summer of swimming fun!

With that said, I find myself thinking of all the things the kids need this summer like some new outfits, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and of course bathing suits to go swimming in.

I find when buying bathing suits for kids, especially girls under the age of three its hard to find a bathing suit that doesn't replica a mini version of a bikini or tankini. As cute as those bathing suits are, protection from the sun comes with using the right sunscreen covering up, cover-ups and t-shirts are often worn over swimsuits.

Baby M will be well protected this year thanks to SwimZip, UV protectant swimwear for the family! Unlike other bathing suits, SwimZip suits offer 98% UVA and UVB ray protection from the hot summer sun on little ones skin.

SwimZip swimwear was founded by Betsy Johnson after she was diagnosed a few years ago with skin cancer. She went on a mission to create swimwear that is comfortable and affordable while giving parents peace of mind that their little ones (and themselves) are protected from harmful UV rays while out having summer fun.

SwimZip offers many different designs and styles to choose from for little boys and girls from baby up to tween sizes! They even have hats to top off the summer look. I took a look at different designs; Long sleeve, short sleeve and more. I decided to go with "Watermelon" for my little watermelon, 18-24 months size.

What I like about these bathing suits is that they are easy to put on, this is great for moms like me who have a wriggling toddler! The top zips up the front and the bottoms slide on like any other bottoms over a swim-diaper or without.

I really like Baby M's new watermelon SwimZip bathing suit! Lightweight material means no soggy bums when shes swimming in the toddler pool and the bright colours look absolutely adorable on her! I can see many a happy summer day out in the sun for this little one! Now all we need is a new matching hat and baby sandals! :)

If you are looking for a cute bathing suit that also protects from the suns strong rays, check out SwimZip - making UV protection a ZIP!

Fathers Day coming up on Sunday, June 15th. This year we can answer the big question - what do we get the man who seems to have everything already?

Easy. Get him a custom shirt or better yet get him a gift card to order himself a custom shirt just the way he likes it from Original Stitch

Original Stitch isn't your usual shirt-shop. Instead of your typical mass-produced shirts that you have to fish through to find a great shirt, with Original Stitch you (or he) can create a custom, taylor made shirt to suit his needs all in the comfort of your own home.

It's free to sign up (you get $20 off your order just for designing your first shirt!) and you can easily get started online (from a computer or mobile) with the 3D interactive app from Original Stitch.

It takes you through step by step from shirt style to colours to material, style down to the buttons and complete measurements. You see everything you customize on a neat 3D model. The fun part with this is that you can have your kids also help customize a shirt for dad or for Grandpa, an extra special Father's Day gift!

Shirts are priced around $80 and up depending how custom you want it. Once you place your order and pay (credit card or PayPal) you get an email asking about sizing for arm lenth and neck. Super neat and really custom, hubby and I were very impressed. Shirts arrive in a nice gift box about two weeks after ordering.

For us, a shirt like this is a little out of budget for everyday wear but hubby doesn't wear dress shirts every single day so paying the price for the quality can always be worth it. I would definitely go back to order another special shirt for an ocassion or gift.

The shirt itself looks gorgeous and the design he chose suits his style. He says it may just be one of his new favourite shirts, especially since it's customized with his family name on the cuff.

We are in the midst of spring (although some days feel like summer already!) and more often than not we find ourselves outside with the family including our dogs, letting them roam around the yard and do what dogs love to do best - chase squirrels and play!

Spring means tick season. One day a couple of weeks back we brought in the dogs after some outside time and hubby noticed something weird on one of them - a grayish, hard bump on the back of their neck! With a closer look we realized it was a tick from outside! The dog must have gone in the brush at the back of the yard and a tick latched on. It wasn't there very long but the first thing that came to mind was Lyme Disease.

What is a tick? Ticks are tiny parasites that feed on blood. Unlike mosquito's and other insects that "bite and run", ticks latch on by burrowing their "teeth" into the skin and feed for hours or sometimes days before falling off once engorged. As gross as they sound it gets worse, ticks can also carry and spread Lyme Disease to both dogs and humans. Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi carried by smaller animals such as rodents which ticks also can feed from.
Did you know that Spring time is tick season and dogs are at risk of Lyme Disease? I knew this having pets growing up in the country but I honestly did not think of it until we saw that ugly parasite on our dog. Prevention is the most effective way to protect your pet and family against ticks and Lyme Disease.

K9 Avantix II is a topical treatment that protects dogs before ticks bite. The formula has been developed specifically for dogs by Bayer Animal Health and reduces the risk of parasite-transmitted diseases like Lyme Disease.

K9 Avantix II kills many different species of ticks including Deer ticks, Rocky Mountain Wood ticks and American dogticks, Brown dog ticks and Lone Star ticks up to four weeks with each application. K9 Avantix II kills fleas within 24 hours and continues to protect for up to a month.

Our big girl Daizy is going to have a special "doggie spa day" and her own treatment soon enough and thanks to K9 Advantix II, she (and we) will enjoy a more worry-free summer!

Our little guy is always building something. He's got collections of different kinds of kid building materials like Lego, Mega Bloks and others. He definitely gets his love for building from his father "the handy man" who can fix or build just about anything for the home. I know I can't build anything, I took woodworking in highschool and my attempt at a wooden key holder was quite shameful.

He is always showing off his work (which I love) and always coming up with something new, usually something as an accessory to one of his other toys. Most cases his cars or his super heroes.

The other day while out playing, he dug into the "outside toys" bin and found himself some building material. With some old foam blocks and part of an old Hot Wheels race track he built this:

I asked him what he was building with all that and he said it was a covered bridge that so that his cars can safely get across. I think he was pretending the glass table was water or something.

As you can see, I had to take his picture per his request to show off his work. He has such a great imagination, I hope it stays with him always. Maybe he will go to great places in the future with this passion for building. No matter what, he always makes us proud.

During the month of May, we celebrated women. It was Moms turn to shine in the spotlight. It was Grandmas turn to be spoiled. For the month of June, we celebrate the men in our lives.

There aren't too many people who can hold that extra special place in my heart beyond my family. My kids get automatic dibs and their father, he managed to get himself a place almost from the day we met. He found me in a place years ago when I was at one of my lowest points, I lacked confidence and I needed support but wouldn't admit it. Through his caring ways he brought me out of that place and he showed me strength I forgot I had inside. We started a family together and I became a better person.

I am happy I am raising my family with my best friend. He's more than just my hubby, he's my other half and my "partner in crime'. He has been the one I have had my morning coffee with almost every day for the last 11 years. We have been through some hard times, times when things seemed to be going smooth. We have seen eachother through gain and loss, we have seen eachother through laughter and tears. I wouldn't want to raise our family with anyone else.

Hubby with our little man at a family dinner out!
The thing that makes him special to me beyond all that is being a great dad and partner. After all these years he is here for me when I need to talk, cry, laugh or just want to have some adult time after spending the day with the kids. He spends time making his family happy, quality time with his kids because they asked or even when they don't ask. He walks the dogs after a long day, even if its raining out and so much more. He loves his family and he shows it every day, just as a father should.

Being an important part of our lives, we want to make sure he is happy and healthy too. He believes in staying active and he tries to eat right which is why he started drinking the Orange Naturals ND shakes for men after we were introduced to them several months ago. He agrees, the more healthy energy he has for his kids the better for everyone.

It may not be summer just yet, we have a few weeks left of school still but being it June, our minds are thinking summer holidays.

When it comes to summer time, memories are made with the laughter outdoor play brings, especially when the whole family joins in the fun. With the days of Summer drawing near, we prepare our water blaster collection for another year of fun!

As you may or may not know, my family are pretty big on not just swimming in the summer months but water play altogether.

We have quite the collection of Nerf Super Soakers, they are a fun and simple way to cool off on a hot day. You can be creative and come up with some fun games, make targets and take points. The limits are endless when it comes to water play with Nerf Super Soaker.

For our tween daughter, Nerf Rebelle Dolphina Bow Blaster is the water sister to the Nerf Rebelle Blaster except instead of darts, it shoots water for a different kind of blaster. When she first saw this via a commercial on TV, she was asking about it. She was excited to try it right out! It has a really fast blast with just one pump, of course she sprayed me with it and used really cold water. Excellent addition to our Nerf collection!

For the boy, Nerf Super Soaker Barrage has a huge capacity tank and three soaking modes. It's much bigger than I expected it to be but not big enough that little guy can't carry it around. With three settings, little guy can hit his target with as much or as little force as he wants!

As always, Nerf Super Soaker does not disappoint with the fun to be had with these new blasters added to our family collection. We are sure to have a soaking good time this summer!
