With the warmer temperatures finally here we can't help but count the days down until school is out and we can all enjoy summer vacation! On a nice hot day it's always fun to break out the water toys outside with the kids, in particular Nerf Super Soakers

What I like about Nerf Super Soakers is that they offer a variety of different styles from the old-pump action style to newer battery operated, motorized styles which makes it easy for kids and adults alike to enjoy a good water fight on a hot summer day!  An excellent way to both cool off and have some good fun!

We had the opportunity to take a look at Nerf's newest additions to the Super Soaker family:

Super Soaker Electrostorm:  Beat your opponent quickly with power-soaking from the motorized Super Soaker Electrostorm. This is the perfect soaker for your younger team members as there is no pumping involved to get the best blast! Simply pull the trigger and Electrostorm does all the work!  Requires 4 AA batteries (not included). Ages 6 and up.

Super Soaker Tornado: This water blaster definitely earned its name with spinning and soaking action! This is a powerful pump-handle blaster with a spinning barrel that lets you fire a spinning water stream to soak your opponent up to 20 feet away! There's no running from the Tornado, adding the detachable stock adjusts your blaster to your reach giving your target a soaking they won't soon forget! Ages 6 and up.

Super Soaker Lightning Storm: Soak your friends with this full-auto motorized Super Soaker! With it's super sized water drum and detachable stock, you won't miss your target with this blaster! It even features a blast shield to help block incoming water shots! Add additional water clips (sold separately) for ultimate soaking action. Get ready for a blast with this sleek, super-powered addition to the Nerf family! Ages 6 and up.

Now the hardest part is going to be choosing who will use which blaster in our family water fight fun! For more information about Nerf Super Soakers please visit www.hasbro.com/Nerf.

Happy soaking!

Meet Mia, the newest member of our family. She loves kids, dogs and playing. She is energetic and full of life, your typical puppy.

We had been talking about the possibility of adding another pet to the family - but in a few years. Hubbys sister got her kids a puppy not to long ago but unfortunately they realized their already busy schedule wouldn't allow proper care for her so they made the difficult decision to let her go to another loving home, someone who had more time for her.
We had a few things to take into consideration before accepting the offer to adopt Mia. We had to think about our two current dogs, would they like another friend? We had to think about the fact that she is not house broken, would we be able to handle training another puppy? We accepted the offer after agreeing that we already have two well-behaved dogs, she is still a young puppy and she will learn.
As of this past Monday, Mia is now living with us. When she first got here she did not know what to think of our two dogs, Zeus and Ruffy. She was a little bit afraid as there was a lot of excitement between the dogs and the kids but eventually we were able to coax her out and she was introduced to her new home and family.

As for the dogs, no problem welcoming her. Zeus is so used to little dogs he really doesn't bother with her and tries avoiding her if she starts to rough house. Ruffy seems to be happy to have a friend almost his size, he doesn't mind sharing his doggie bed with her.
It has been only a couple of days and so far she has been behaving exceptionally well for a puppy who just moved in. She will need some work with training and house breaking but that is all part of having a puppy.

We are all very happy we were able to give Mia a loving forever home and look forward to many an adventure with her!

I love it when Ottawa puts together something fun for families to enjoy, especially in our end of town - it makes it so much easier to get there and back with the kids!

Every summer St. Laurent Shopping Centre hosts a variety of live shows for families. The shows have ranged from My Little Pony to Barney and Fifi and the Flower Tots to name a few that we have seen.

This year there are two great events happening at St. Laurent Shopping Centre that are sure to be a hit with both kids and grown-ups alike! We are quite excited and can't wait to take the kids!

Thursday May 31 – Saturday June 2:  Orkin’s “The Incredible World of Bugs”
“The Incredible World of Bugs” is an educational exhibit of domestic and exotic international bugs in glass cases.   With lots of educational information, and really neat bugs to look at, kids are guaranteed to have a great time and learn something new.

Saturday, June 23rd and Sunday, June 24th: “Thomas and Friends”
This children’s show will feature Thomas and friends, Trackmaster engines, play sets as well as a special appearance by Angelina Ballerina. Performances will take place at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM in Centre Court.

As a parent who has attended these types of shows before I can tell you they are worth the trip to the mall however make sure you get there early because they are popular and sitting areas for younger kids fill up fast!

For more information about these and other events happening at St. Laurent shopping centre please visit the website, http://www.stlaurent-centre.com/events.html

Last Wednesday night I had been invited to the screening of "What to Expect When You're Expecting" - a movie I actually wanted to see because most of the cast are great actors and I had also heard a lot about the movie. Anyway, hubby was supposed to go out and I had no sitter for the kids so I ended up turning down a set of VIP tickets.

I went along and gave a set away here on AME, one of my readers shouldn't have to miss out because I am! Monday afternoon I get a text from my friend Jennifer @couponmomcanada asking me what I am doing on Wednesday night. I had a feeling about what she was going to ask me so I told her I wasn't doing anything that I knew of. She asked me if I wanted to go see "What to Expect..." with her on Wednesday, she also got VIP screening tickets and thought it would be fun for us girls to get out and have an evening.

I asked hubby if he was sure he was going to be going out on Wednesday and luckily enough it turned out plans changed and he wasn't going anywhere which worked out in our favour and I was able to join Jennifer for the screening!

She arrived at my house and we left right away, we decided to bus directly there but of course the closest bus was a 22 minute wait so we walked up a bit to the next stop. We waited a bit and the bus finally came. According to Google Maps on my iPhone this particular bus apparently took the same route as the original bus we were supposed to take. We were chatting away and I guess I either wasn't paying attention or the map was wrong but we passed our stop by a couple of streets. Oops, you have to know Jennifer and I - this happens a lot when we are out together but hey, it's all in good fun and we always get a good laugh after. So we took a little walk backwards and finally found the theater - just in the nick of time too, the theater was packed as they usually are for screenings.

The theater staff actually put the wrong movie on at first which was quite amusing. I didn't recognize either of the actors being in "What to Expect" in the short amount we saw. We got to see the first 30 seconds of 5 Year Engagement, now I will have to go see the rest. After a good laugh they finally got the movie going - we waited through two sets of previews for this!

Everyone looked larger than life with the seats we had but the movie and evening was great nonetheless. I enjoyed the movie quite a bit as it focuses on the ins and outs of pregnancy, relationships during pregnancy and dads role in the whole parenting gig. There were moments that had us laughing, moments where I had to wipe a tear away and moments that just made me smile and remember living some of that myself when I was expecting.

I won't ruin it by telling you what happens in the movie but if you are a mom-to-be or a seasoned mom, you will enjoy "What to Expect When You're Expecting" the movie.

After the movie we headed off to Tim Hortons for a hot coffee. It was a little bit of a chilly walk at first, I guess with the amount of people in the theater we had a lot of body heat keeping us warm (as Jenn pointed out). We caught a bus back to my place and had our coffee inside chit chatting before Jenn headed off on her way.

Thank you @CouponMomCanada for the lovely evening out, we will have to do it again before we hit the streets of Toronto for #Sccto and #BlissdomCanada this fall! :)

Disclosure: Personal post by AME. I was invited for a night out with a friend and in no way obligated to write about the film in this post. Opinions and comments on this blog are those of AME.

It feels as though we have been waiting forever for the chill to leave and warmer weather to move in for Spring 2012.  The last few days have been delightful here in Ottawa (even though it's supposed to rain today!), totally time to take advantage and set up some final touches to the back yard.

As you know we began a few weeks ago with a new trampoline for the kids, fun and good exercise all in one. They still use it almost every day, weather permitting. Hubby set up the kids tent outside, they love playing in there and treat it like a clubhouse. Usually inside you can find a blanket, books, paper, colouring pencils or crayons, stuffed animals and of course one of the kids.

The kids have been waiting a long time for a bigger back yard pool. Our yard isn't big enough for a 'real' pool of course and we could only get a certain size that fit perfectly in the space that hubby figured it would look good in. Yes, we live across from the public pool but that's just it - public. Sometimes it's closed or full of older kids who splash and aren't always careful. I almost feel like a babysitter going there having to watch everybody else's kids to make sure mine are ok! Some days during summer vacation I really just want to keep my sanity and enjoy the serenity of our own back yard.

We have indeed invested in a larger blow-up pool for the kids. It has two pools in one so there's no fighting. It was very basic to set up, hubby has an air compressor in the basement so it literally took only minutes to inflate. Filling it with water was the long part, especially when little guy kept taking the hose out of the pool!

He was so excited to see the pool being set up and filled but unfortunately his fear of water returned. Upon his first attempt to actually get in the pool once it was full, he fell. Face first into the water he went. Of course we were right there to grab him even though the water is shallow. He freaked right out and wanted no more to do with the pool except look at it from a distance.

Maybe we will be able to convince him to join his sister sometime over the summer, that event should make the public pool interesting again this year. I thought for sure we had broken his fear of water last year when he wanted to go swimming with his puddle jumpers. I guess he will need a little time, that's okay we are in no rush. We just want them to have a fun summer and I'm pretty sure by the look on K's face that they will!

We hope you all have been enjoying the nice weather if you are lucky enough to have had it visit your way! We can't wait for summer to officially begin, can't you tell?

Snacking is something we all do a lot of around here. As much as I promote healthy eating when it comes to my kids, I do let them indulge from time to time. Especially if they see one of us adults indulging - it's only fair we share right? After a long day sometimes you just need a familiar snack.

One snack that is always enjoyed by all is potato chips. We don't buy chips often in our house but when we do we can't just buy any old kind. My hubby and I are fairly particular when it comes to what kind of chips we buy to enjoy and Lay's has always been our top choice.

I enjoy opening up a fresh bag of Lay's as I sit down with my family for a special movie night. My favourite flavour is Ketchup while hubby prefers Salt and Vinegar flavour. There is just something about the crisp, freshness of Lays that has us coming back for more. It's good to know they are low in saturated fats and contain zero trans fats too.

Lay's recently announced they are now certified gluten free by the Canadian Celiac association. They have not added or removed anything from their ingredients in fact Lay's has always been Gluten free, it just took them a while to be recognized! This is excellent news for people with serious digestive problems like gluten intolerance or Celiac disease.

In celebration of this new announcement, Lay's was kind enough to send us over a beautiful Lay's branded basket filled with Lay's chips in almost every flavour. Thanks for the snacks!

The first thing I looked at was the packaging, normally when a product is gluten free, nut free, etc it states so on the packaging. Lay's has it right there under the list of ingredients where it should be.

Lay's has not changed a thing about their chips other than announcing they are officially gluten free. Lay's chips still look the same and still have the same classic quality taste and freshness we love. Finding out something new about something you are familiar with isn't always a bad thing, at least not for Lay's now officially gluten free chips!

Find out which of your favourite Lay's flavours have been officially certified "Gluten free" by visiting www.lays.ca.

Don't forget to follow Lays on Twitter and Like Lays on Facebook too!

With the much anticipated movie coming out in theaters on May 18th, what better way to help celebrate than reading the book "What to Expect When You're Expecting" by Heidi Murkoff

Pregnancy seems like such a long time ago for me as my youngest child is now four years old and heading into junior kindergarten in the fall. I had many a pregnancy book in my collection but none of them could compare to this book for the vast variety of information inside.

If you aren't familiar with this New York Times bestseller, "What To Expect When You're Expecting" is a brilliantly written book about what to expect before, during and beyond pregnancy as new soon-to-be parents. The title itself says it all as this book is considered the pregnancy bible. "What to Expect When You're Expecting" is read by more than 90% of pregnant women and is the must-have book for parents-to-be. There are currently over 14.5 million copies in print.

The fourth edition was released in 2008 and is a book for a new generation of expectant moms. It features a fresh new look on pregnancy and a friendlier than ever voice from Heidi Murkoff. It's filled with the most up-to-date information that a new parent could be looking for not only for pregnancy itself but also things that are relevant to the pregnant woman.

There are sections in the book for every pregnancy matters practical, physical, emotional, nutritional, and sexual as well as more support for the other very important partner in parenting, the dad-to-be. The book has tons of tips, helpful hints and humour to set the mood for the next nine months.

"What To Expect When You're Expecting" is like your own personal pregnancy assistant, only better! If you are expecting or know someone who is, it's definitely one to add to the home library. You can purchase this book at most book stores like Chapters for about $18.95.

Happy Mother's Day 2012! Oh Mother's Day, the day us moms are pampered and spoiled, left to sleep in and coffee ready when we wake. A day to sit back, relax and just enjoy being a mom - without having to do our daily duties.

I love Mother's Day, every Mom is special in my eyes. I posted a little sentimental post over on the PTPA blog entitled "Celebrating Motherhood" if you care to take a read, you don't have to. It's your day after all :)

We will be celebrating with a quiet day at home, perhaps a BBQ dinner but above all else we will be celebrating together.

Have a fantastic day everyone, no matter how you may celebrate!

Parents in this day and age play many roles in their lives at home, socially and at work. Among the many hats we wear, one may be IT manager on the home front. You know stuff like helping the kids set up their latest remote operated toy, getting that pesky DVD player running again and troubleshooting the family computer that suddenly decided to run turtle-slow.

We are a tech family all the way, between handheld devices like phones and tablets to desktop computers, laptops and gaming consoles we each have our fair share of gadgets. Being a blogger there are certain tools I need to have working on a daily basis such as my net book and phone. If something does go wrong I usually panic and ask hubby to look at it as he prefers fixing everything himself but there are also times he isn't available at that very moment and I need it fixed immediately or at least know what’s wrong with it!

Usually when something like that happens I turn to the World Wide Web to possibly help me solve my problem, web search and of course twitter are my favourite resources. Best Buy has always prided itself on being able to help Canadians with their tech needs and troubles, I am happy to see they have now taken it one step further on my favourite social media platform Twitter, with @Twelpforce!

Best Buy's @Twelpforce saves both time and hassle. Twelpforce is basically Best Buy's army of technology pros who have taken to twitter to answer any type of consumer tech question.

The service is easy to use and it's quick! Any time you have a problem with your home technology - big or small, from figuring out the settings on your new camera to connecting your new gaming system simply tweet @Twelpforce and within minutes you'll get a number of replies from some of the most experienced tech experts out there.

Now I definitely know who to turn to when I need help with my tech woe's. With @Twelpforce to the rescue, there is no more stressing and no more guessing!

Win it!

Do you like shopping at Best Buy? Me too! You have the chance to win one of two $50 Best Buy gift cards AND try out @Twelpforce for yourself!

Our little guy is officially registered for school! The scariest part was making the final decision. I think I had the registration forms on the desk for a while staring at me, taunting me to decide to fill them out once and for all. Well, the paperwork went in about a month ago and as of September he will be a Junior Kindergartner.

The school is now slowly starting to set up everything for new students coming to the school in the fall. We got a phone call to set up a meeting for an assessment of Ds education. I was very honest on his application, I didn't leave anything out and answered the questions thoroughly. Anything I felt a concern about that they needed to know at school I wrote down for them.

The assessment went well, he seemed to have impressed the teachers we had our meeting with. We talked all about him and they had many questions, some about his premature birth - considering he's so big and your average boy now. That was a little bit hard, it's always hard for me to dig back into that part of my memory but I did because they felt it was important.

DS spent time playing with the toys in the principals office. He really took a liking to the die-cast cars, not wanting to let the red one go when we had to leave. That was fun, trying to convince him that he has lots of cars at home and that the principal wasn't there to say it was OK so he had to leave them. He was not happy even though the teacher offered him a special toy from a toy box.

snuck a snap before the meeting began ;)
There are a few more things over the summer we need to do to prepare such as the "Step into Kindergarten" program and "Bus Safety" program I signed him up for. I did not miss out on signing him up for anything the school had to offer.

I'm happy our schools have these programs to help prepare both parents and child, it makes the move so much easier. Sometimes we have "parental anxiety" and think of the worst that can happen when we are unsure but the kids are just fine. I remember having plenty of "parental anxiety" moments when our oldest K started school.

The tears did not come from her whatsoever on her first day of preschool. She ran for a table full of crafts and never looked back. People say its easier with the second, I beg to differ. I find it just as difficult as when we sent our first one off to school, for me anyway.

Now when we mention school to DS he rambles on about taking the big yellow bus with K and going to his new school will be "so much fun" - its nice to see his enthusiasm and I hope it continues. He certainly is not a baby anymore!

leaving our meeting "come on mom!"

Stay tuned for more adventures as we prepare our boy (and ourselves) for his first year of school in fall 2012!

Friday was AME's third birthday and we got a special gift from @KraftCanada to celebrate! This is the very first time someone has ever sent a blogiversary gift for AME, quite exciting!

It came via courier in a HUGE box, a lovely gift with a big blue bow on top containing a blogiversary card, #3 candle, Oreo cookies, Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate bars and the big kicker - a brand new Tassimo brewer with T-Discs!

This is awesome because a couple of years ago I actually won a Tassimo brewer on Twitter and it ended up going haywire, it broke after warranty. I never looked into having it repaired and just moved on going back to my plain old 12-cup brewer. Don't get me wrong, the old brewer makes wonderful coffee that gets me through my days and blog posts but it's plain. I missed having a nice specialty coffee right from my own kitchen and now I can enjoy it once again! Let's cross our fingers I don't break it this time - I'm totally kidding.

I think it likes its new home ;)

Huge Thank you to the team @KraftCanada for sending me this gift! I was not expecting this at all, it made my day along with all the lovely comments and tweets I had been receiving. You all know how to make a lady feel special!

Happy Blogiversary A Motherhood Experience! On May 4th 2009 I wrote my first post on AME. Actually I wrote several short posts all in one day and they were not very good so I won't bother linking you to those disasters. I guess I was testing out the waters. Ah well, we learn as we go along and I have learned a lot of things over the last three years.
I have experienced beyond what I thought I would ever embarking into the blogging world. I am happy I took the step forward and opened that personal blog about my family. I'm happy that I fell into the world of product reviews and turned this blog around into something more. I have had the opportunity to work with some amazing brands and meet some amazing people including a wonderful community of bloggers just like me.

I'm happy I had the chance to go to two of Canada's best women's conferences ShesConnected and BlissdomCanada '11 last fall. I'm thankful for our sponsor to this very day, if it wasn't for them I wouldn't have had the chance to expand, learn and spend some quality time with some of the ladies I hold dearest to my heart today. I really hope we have the same opportunity this year, I would love to relive those memories (and make some new ones) for sure. I am happy this has turned out to be more than just a blog, it's a whole new world, my  kind of world.

Thank you for being such loyal readers whether you come here for my quirky parenting stories, cute snaps of the kids, giveaways or stumbled here by accident - I appreciate every visit! ;-)

I had a great idea for a giveaway but I have been back-logged, swamped with things to do both here on the blog and above all, my offline life. I didn't have time to properly put together the "extra special" giveaway for you guys but I do have some current giveaways happening and will always continue to try and offer them to you as often as I can :)

Let's have another fabulous bloggy year! Happy Blogiversary AME!

Mmmm Popcorn!

We have featured a few Popcorn inspired recipes here on AME like Popcorn bars and ways to use Popcorn around the holidays. I never thought such a simple snack could be used in so many different ways! We learn new things every day!

Mompreneur and food specialist, Korey Kealey, has come up with some great Popcorn inspired recipes! They are not what you'd typically expect from popcorn like "Popcorn Tacos" for dinner and "Peanut Butter Popcorn cookies" for dessert. One in particular I think would be a great snack for a playdate or birthday party is "Fruity Popcorn Pops"!

Orville Redenbacher's® SmartPop! microwave popcorn stars in this fun edible party decoration and party activity! Use your imagination of how to decorate the tops of the Popcorn Pops

Microwave time: 2 ½ - 3 minutes
Prep time: 5 minutes
Makes: 6 pops

1 pkg. (80g) Orville Redenbacher's® SmartPop! microwave popcorn, divided
1 250g bag colored mini marshmallows, divided
2 tbsp. (30 mL) butter
1 container (850g) Orville Redenbacher's® Popping Corn
Glass vase – shallow and rectangular
6 Lollipop sticks (10-inches)
Large Muffin tin

Prepare Orville Redenbacher's® SmartPop! microwave popcorn according to package directions; remove from microwave, shake and leave closed to keep hot.

Place 2 cups (500 mL) marshmallows and butter in large microwave safe mixing bowl; microwave on HIGH for 30-45 seconds or until marshmallows are puffed up and butter is beginning to melt. Stir lightly; open hot popcorn bag; add popcorn to marshmallow mixture; stir gently to blend.

In muffin tins, divide remaining marshmallows between the 6 cups (there may be extras); form popcorn mixture into large balls; press ball into cup with marshmallows; press firmly. Insert lollipop stick.
