We always encourage our kids to be themselves, there is nobody in this world like them and that makes everyone unique. Everyone has something they are good at, everyone gets scared sometimes.

We try to teach our kids to always be themselves and try their best at the things they love and to try new things even if they are scared. Many times my daughter has come home with a smile after doing something she thought she couldn't. Like when she was shy to sign up for the girls dance club at school - she's on her third year this year!

As my oldest daughter is hitting Tweenhood hard, with new experiences, roles and responsibilities - it can be downright scary. She fell in love with Monster High about four years ago, she got her first Draculara doll for her birthday that year. The message with these dolls is that everyone is great the way they are no matter what and everyone has their own unique story.

Monster High Haunted is coming to DVD on March 24 and its a movie that deals with just that - the movie follows our favourite Monster High ghouls as they travel to a parallel ghost world and discover Haunted High - an all ghost school shut off from the monster world. If your child is preparing to head somewhere new, going through a transitional phase, or is participating in a sports team or other activities where they may meet new friends, here are some good tips from our friends at Monster High to help our  tweens along.

Be Yourself, Be Unique

I think this one can go for both kids and adults, sometimes when you are entering something new it can be overwhelming and can make us feel like we can't find someone with common interests. It's best to always be yourself and stay positive. Eventually you will find someone who will appreciate you for who you are and one day maybe you will be the best of friends. If you pretend to be someone you're not, it will come around and haunt you in the end!

Patience is key.

It takes time to get used to new people and new surroundings, being patient can pay off. If your child feels anxious or nervous, being patient is a good way to help calm things down and be able to get used to things easier. Good things take time as they say.

Embrace your imperfections and embrace your individuality.

A great way to get to know others and your environment is to get involved and participate. Encouraging your kids to be as engaged as they can be will give them the opportunity to branch out, learn new things and meet like minded individuals. Talk to them about ways they can go above and beyond to get involved with new friends!

I know as my kids grow, we will face many times where they will feel unsure. Even as an adult I often have my moments when I am unsure. Communicating and letting them know we are here for them no matter what is the foundation to helping them through the trials and tribulations of growing up.

If you have a little ghoul who loves Monster High like mine does, check out the Monster High YouTube channel! There are some great videos on there which I think kids can really relate to.

Spring time is a great time to really show the kids what it means to take care of the earth by getting them to help out in what I like to call the 'community clean up'. We get out the garbage/recycle bags, put on our rubber boots and grab a rake or two for an afternoon of picking up anything we see that has surfaced from under the winter snow.

The yard still has a lot of melting left to do but we have started to pick up trash, debris and other things that may have ended up in the yard and became covered in snow during the winter months. It's a dirty job but it's our earth, it's our job. We can feel proud to know we helped, even if it was in a small way like cleaning our own backyard.

Earth Day is April 22nd and we are celebrating all things enviro-friendly with @EnviroKidz by Nature's Path. They are all about making learning about the environment and animals fun and also delicious for kids!

EnviroKidz welcomes you to try out this yummy Chocolate Garden Cups recipe for Earth Day! These cups are perfect for kids parties or after school snacks, so adorable and fun to make for the whole family. Topped with yummy organic Choco Chimps cereal, this delicious and simple eggless chocolate pudding is light and not too sweet.

How to make and what you need:

Easy Chocolate Milk Pudding:
1 ¾ cup chocolate milk, room temperature
2 tbsp. cocoa powder
2 tbsp. corn starch
1 tbsp. maple syrup or sweeten to taste

Garden Cups:
1/2 cup Choco Chimps Cereal, crushed
Sprig of mint

1. Combine cocoa powder and cornstarch in a small pot.
2. Gradually stir in milk and whisk until smooth. Stir in maple syrup.
3. Stirring constantly, bring to slow boil. Whisk for 1 minute until pudding thickens.
4. Remove from heat and pour into small mason jars or jam jars, leaving space for topping.
5. Chill for 1 hour until cooled and thickened.
6. Top with crushed Choco Chimps Cereal and garnish with sprig of mint and Popsicle stick.

You can find this and other yummy recipes on the EnviroKidz official website! Check out all of the great food products they have to offer including various cereals and snack bars!

One lucky AME has the chance to win an EnviroKidz Celebrate the earth Party Kit *$100 value* which includes various product and items to help you celebrate Earth Day!

Saving is important in our family, especially when we are saving on energy in our home. During the winter months we consume more energy than the entire year because of gas heating and shorter days mean longer times the lights and other things tend to be on.

Saving on energy isn't difficult and it doesn't cost you much to switch over and start doing things to better  both your budget and the environment. Some great ideas for saving energy in your home include:

- Switching from normal light bulbs to LED bulbs. Not only do they produce less heat and energy than regular bulbs, they also last longer and brighten rooms just as well if not better. We have been using energy efficient bulbs for years now.

- Hanging laundry to dry. Once the snow is gone, the temperature rises and the sun is out more, we can begin hanging our clothes outside on the line to dry. Don't have a back yard or area to put an outdoor clothesline, no problem. You can get drying racks which can easily fit indoors in your laundry area or on a balcony or small outdoor patio space.

- Installing light timers, motion sensors and dimmers. These are especially useful for outdoor lights or lights you don't need to constantly use. We have a back door light which comes on with motion. It isn't constantly going but lights up when needed. Saving your energy and also the bulb as it's used less than a typical light.

- Get rid of ghost energy. Did you know that even when an electronic like a TV, cellphone charger or computer is powered off it can still consume what they call "phantom power"? Using electricity unless they are completely unplugged. What a waste! By plugging electronics into an energy efficient power bar you can reduce the use by turning off the power bar itself, thus cutting off any unwanted, unused and wasted electricity. We live on power bars with all the electronics we have.

- Installing a ceiling fan can help circulate air in your home with air conditioning. With a ceiling fan running you can turn down cold and still be comfortable. We rent our home so we cannot install a ceiling fan, we use standing fans or square fans in the summer and keep the windows open but my parents always had one running in the house, even lightly in winter to help circulate the air. Great idea that has been used for years!

- Save some hot water by changing the shower heads and kitchen faucets to energy efficient ones. You can find these at your local hardware store. Also, it's a good idea to reduce the temperature of your hot water tank when you leave on a vacation or in the hotter summer months. I find we tend to not need the water as hot during the blistering month of July into August most of the time.

Investing in small changes around your home will help you save in many ways in the long run. Did you know that since 2006, through the saveONenergy coupon program, Ontarians have reduced enough energy to power a city the size of North Bay for a year! That's a lot of power my friends!

You can get in on the savings too! From March 27 to April 26, saveONenergy spring coupons offer discounts on LEDs and a wide variety of energy efficient products at participating retailers across Ontario! The Spring Coupon Event is one of many offered by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) and local distribution companies to help Ontarians better manage their electricity consumption and reduce electricity costs!

It's time to break out of our winter sweaters and put our cleaning clothes on. The snow is finally starting to melt, the days are longer and sunnier - sure signs that Spring is around the corner! Spring not only means the change in season but in our house it also means a change in our own home - SPRING CLEANING!

Although the house does get a weekly cleaning, over the winter months things can accumulate from clothing to toys and just things in general. Dust appears to grow out of nowhere, you don't even want to look under the couch. The front hall looks like frosty the snowman melted and everyone's tired winter gear strewn about. You get the picture, the house needs some serious TLC!

Out with the old, in with the new. It's time to declutter, degerm and make everything shine, one room at a time. Summer comes faster than we know it and we want to be out there enjoying the beautiful days, spring cleaning is a must-do!

Putting dust in its place is easy with Swiffer 360 Duster Extender kit. Dust clings to it like static and with the extender, we can reach those areas we didn't know could have dust! I love using the Swiffer Dusters in those hard to reach places like between the cable box/blu ray player in the livingroom and they are gentle enough to get dust off the front of the flat screen tv. They are also great to get the kids helping out too, dusting the lower areas of the house.

Opening up the windows when the weather warms up is a great way to naturally change the air in our home. Febreze is also here to help us avoid becoming nose-blind with Febreze Air Effects and Febreze Noticeables products from room to room.

Once we get the house back in order we can make our way down to the laundry room. Tide Liquid Detergent is put to work to wash those tired winter snow suits, mitts, hats and anything else to put away for next year. Bedsheets, curtains and other household linens get a refresh plus a spritz of Febreze will keep them smelling great.

Once the bathroom has a fresh shower curtain, clean decorative spring themed hand towels and everything from the sink to the toilet is sparkling clean, we like to place a fresh box of Puffs Basic Tissue on the side counter. It just gives the room that welcoming look plus, you never know when you have a nose in need!

As a mom of 3 plus dogs, I'm happy P&G is here to help us get things going with great household products for just about every task we have on our spring cleaning list!

Having kids brings many moments of nostalgia with so many of our childhood favourites still brought to life today in the TV shows our own kids watch and the toys that they play with. It gives us a moment to share, to tell our story about our favourite childhood things to our own kids. We all know how much a kid loves a "back in the day" story.

One in particular that brings back memories is Thomas and Friends. That show has been airing on TV since I can remember and although it has changed over the years, my kids are as big of fans as we were growing up. We have a small collection of Thomas and Friends toys, I wish I had saved some toys from our childhood, I think they would have enjoyed them as much.

Playtime is an essential part of growing up and as parents, we like to get down and play with our kids. It not only grows the bond between us but it also creates wonderful memories for everyone. Here are some great tips to help you create some ever-lasting memories with your little ones.

Let them be the conductor.

When our little ones decide how to play for themselves, they experience the freedom in making choices. They also learn to build a connection between choice and consequence or choice and effect. Playing a combination of "open-ended" toys such as blocks and "close-ended" toys such as their favourite Thomas & Friends toy. By using their imaginations they will be able to use the toys however they want and also learn while they play.

Go off track.

It's so easy to lose track of time when you are playing with your favourite toy! When children are really engaged in play they are able to let their curiosity and imagination make new ideas and concepts. We all have schedules to keep but if you happen to see your little one engaged in play, try to let him play a little longer. I often find myself saying yes to "5 more minutes mom?".

Embrace the theme.

Bring your child's favourite characters to life with a themed party or even a play date. They will love it and be totally immersed in their favourite toys. Be sure to have a camera ready to capture all the precious moments of family and friends. You will look back on the Thomas & Friends party hats for a good laugh and walk down memory lane in the future.

Little guy showing his baby sister how his Thomas and Friends trains work!

A couple of months ago I posted about the BLACKS Shoebox Direct service where you can have your physical photos scanned, digitalized and arranged in a nice memory book to keep while storing your old photos for years to come.

I think the longest part of the whole process was deciding on what pictures to send in and in what order. I wanted everything to be perfect and when our bundle arrived back to us - it was perfect and some!

What we got in our BLACKS Shoebox was a usb flash drive containing all of our scanned photos, a CD containing all of our scanned photos, the original prints we sent in, a beautiful hardcover photo memory book plus a 12" x 12" softcover proof book of the images.

Everything in the package is amazing. We don't have many physical pictures of our own kids so we decided to take a bunch of pictures from our own childhoods and some of each of our parents when they were younger and turn them into a gorgeous memory book for everyone to share. Some of the photos were really old and they were brought back to life thanks to BLACKS.

Maybe next time we gather enough photos we can take a trip in and check out what BLACKS has in store too!

Check out BLACKS.ca for more information about the Shoebox Direct service!

We have been talking about redoing our kids rooms for quite some time. Hubby has visions of what he would like to do with them, themed in the kids current interests and favourites. Our son chose a superhero themed room. He loves everything super hero.

My mom paints, she has done so my entire life on and off and it makes me so happy to share with you, the paintings she created for our sons room!

You can get posters, wall stickers and all kinds of fun decals in stores but they can get expensive (plus the last time we did decals they didn't stay on the wall very long) and paintings like this aren't something you see every day. They are something our son can enjoy for his entire life, a keepsake from his grandmother and he loves them!

We met when you were 28, I was 23. Can you believe it's been 12 years? You have changed throughout the years, as have I but not how you may think. You have grown from the young man I knew to the mature father and husband I now love.

Happy 40th birthday, my love. We may not have a fancy car or a big house but there are things you have given me which nobody else could ever and that is our three beautiful children plus a lifetime of love and commitment.

God gave the world a great person when you were born, we have your parents to thank for raising you. I am happy to be here to celebrate this milestone with you, look back on the memories and can't wait to share the next 10 years with you to celebrate the next.

Wishing you all the happiness and love you deserve on your 40th...now go eat some cake!

As we prepare for Tax season, we make sure we have all of our important things in order and make copies of each item that we need to keep. In order to keep hard copies intact and organized we like using a file cabinet to do so.

Master Lock can help keep your most important documents safe and secure with Master Lock Vault. It is a digital safe deposit box where you can keep copies of important documents like tax files, bank records, health records, insurance policies, list of important passwords etc all organized in one place. Today our son turns seven years old. No longer a baby, he's growing up to be such a great boy. He makes us proud, he makes us smile.

His story has been told among family and friends since his shocking birth in 2008, since then he has been an inspiration. He has gone through a lot in his seven years and although he can be shy, he is braver than the best of us.

At seven years old he loves to play video games, he enjoys drawing pictures and adores super heroes. He is our little super hero in more ways than one.

Happy birthday little man. We know no matter how big you get and no matter what you do, you will make us proud because you will always be you!

My kids are super kids. From the smiles they give to make someone feel better to the honest kindness they have when they give us drawings they worked so hard to make, our kids are super kids.

They don't have to do anything that makes the local paper or go viral online to be super kids. Just being themselves, being kind, giving and never forgetting to be themselves above all else makes them super. There are many ways in this world that you can be super, everyday.

This is the year to #BeSuper! Barbie has invited kids from across Canada to tap into their own inner superheroes and use their imaginations to show how they are super! We all know one small act can make a big difference and with some imagination and determination, every kid can prove that anything is possible. Here are some great tips to help you and your little ones be super!

Be Kind.

As parents, we all want to teach our children how to be kind to others and the best way to do so is leading by example. You will always be their #1 superhero. Super Squad leader Noemie from our own Ottawa, Ontario set a great example with her "Happy Hearts" fashion charity which raises money through silent auction and a fashion show. She raised nearly $15000 for CHEO.

Be Bold.

Give your kids the opportunity to set their own path and make their own decisions. Help empower leadership, let them be bold and realize that anything is possible when they put their minds to it. For example Super Squad leader Veronika from Surrey, BC recycled juice boxes from her school and used the money raised to give wheelchairs to 60 people in Guatemala.

Be Creative.

Creativity is essential in helping your child reach their peak power potential. Imaginative play is a great way to get that creativity flowing, the sillier the better! Have a crazy dress up party or how about some kooky crafts! The possibilities are endless. Super Squad leader Mya from Stettler, Alberta used her creativity to create a fun program that uses stickers to reward healthy eating called "Lunch Apeel". She went across Canada to spread the word about her program and empower other kids to use their creativity and be super!

For even more tips, join the Barbie Super Squad by visiting www.BeSuper.com. It's easy to get started and it's free to join!

As a member you get access to the downloadable Super Squad handbook which has tips and super monthly missions. Completing monthly missions means your little ones can earn badges and also be entered into contests to win cool prizes like a custom mini-movie to tell the world how awesome they are and product prize packs!

SuperDuper_K signed up and ready for superhero duties!
Something fun for you and your little ones to sit down and do together. We had fun coming up with a good superhero name for my daughter SuperDuper_K! For this month's mission she said kindness is an everyday thing. She will continue to be kind to her siblings, friends and help those who may need a hand.

We will have to go back next month to complete another mission and get a new badge but in the meantime the website offers all kinds of fun things like videos, games, comic strips and much more!
